Plants in the Port Macquarie Region
Gardening in August
August heralds the final month of winter, time to return to our gardens.
Now is a good time to prepare our vegetable patch for the summer months. Apply well-rotted manure and compost and leave to settle for a few weeks prior to planting.
Citrus will respond to a feed for spring; we recommend a good handful of organic life and some compost applied around the drip zone. For potted grown, we suggest a slow-release citrus food.
Spray for weeds in the lawn using a selective herbicide, always apply during dry and calm conditions. Feeding of lawns then is recommended in late August after weeds have been controlled.
Summer vegetables including Cucumber, Tomato, Silverbeet, Zucchini, Snow peas, Lettuce, Radish and Carrots can all be planted now.
Summer annuals, including Petunias, Marigolds, Salvias, Lobelias, Zinnia, Snapdragons planted now will provide colour throughout the summer months.
Camellias will respond to a light prune once flowering is complete. Apply a small handful of fertilizer to maintain healthy growth.
